Kalima Terms of Service

Effective date: July 12, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Kalima iOS app, cloud services, AI-assisted language and voice services, support channels, subscriptions, and related features ("Kalima"). By downloading, accessing, or using Kalima, you agree to these Terms.

For questions, contact [email protected]. The Kalima Privacy Policy is available at https://kalimaapp.com/privacy.

1. Who These Terms Are With

These Terms are between you and Kalima's operator, the provider of Kalima identified in the App Store listing and related published notices. "Kalima," "we," "us," and "our" refer to that operator.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old and old enough to use online services in your country. If you are under the age of majority, you may use Kalima only with permission from a parent or legal guardian.

You may not use Kalima if applicable law prohibits you from doing so.

3. Accounts

Normal use of Kalima requires a real, non-anonymous account through supported sign-in providers such as Apple or Google. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in method, device, and account secure.

You agree to provide accurate account information and to notify us if you believe your account has been compromised.

We may suspend or restrict access if we believe your account is being misused, violates these Terms, creates legal risk, or threatens the security or operation of Kalima.

4. License to Use Kalima

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use Kalima for your own lawful reading and learning purposes.

You may not:

  • Copy, modify, sell, rent, lease, sublicense, or redistribute Kalima except as allowed by law.
  • Reverse engineer or attempt to extract source code except where applicable law allows it.
  • Bypass paywalls, entitlement checks, usage limits, App Check, authentication, or security controls.
  • Interfere with Kalima's services, infrastructure, or other users.
  • Use Kalima to violate law, infringe rights, distribute malware, harass others, or process unlawful content.
  • Abuse AI, cloud sync, import, OCR, speech, or subscription systems.

5. Your Content

"Your Content" means books, files, documents, scans, extracted text, URLs, vocabulary entries, prompts, recordings, and other material you import, enter, save, or process in Kalima.

You keep ownership of Your Content. You grant Kalima a limited license to host, copy, convert, process, transmit, cache, display, and otherwise use Your Content only as needed to provide and improve the features you use, including import, EPUB normalization, OCR, reading, vocabulary, cloud sync, translation, lookup, AI voice, backup, support, security, and legal compliance.

You are responsible for Your Content. You represent that you have the rights needed to import, store, sync, process, and use Your Content in Kalima. Do not upload or process content that violates copyright, privacy, publicity, confidentiality, or other rights.

6. Imported Books, Documents, URLs, and Public-Domain Catalogs

Kalima supports importing books and documents and may normalize supported formats to EPUB for the reader. Kalima does not guarantee that every file can be imported, converted, displayed, preserved, or synced.

When you import from a URL, you are responsible for having permission to access and process that page. The website you import from may receive your request and handle it under its own terms and privacy policy.

Discovery uses public catalog sources such as Gutendex and Project Gutenberg. Catalog data, downloads, covers, metadata, public-domain status, availability, and quality are controlled by third parties. Kalima is not responsible for third-party catalog accuracy, downtime, content, or licensing determinations.

7. Cloud Sync

Cloud sync is local-first and premium-gated. It requires a real non-anonymous account and an active premium entitlement. Eligible book metadata, book files, vocabulary, study history, review events, progress, billing state, and sync state may be stored in Firebase services under your account.

Cloud sync is provided as a convenience. We do not guarantee that sync will be uninterrupted, immediate, error-free, or that every item can be recovered. Keep your own backups of important content.

Signing out resets local account data on the device but does not delete cloud data. Deleting your account is required to request deletion of cloud account data.

8. AI, Translation, Lookup, and Voice Features

Kalima may provide AI-assisted translation, word lookup, vocabulary help, pronunciation support, and AI voice / text-to-speech features. These features may send selected words, selected text, sentences, sentence queues, audio, transcripts, language settings, voice settings, and related request metadata to service providers such as Google/Firebase AI, Google Cloud Run, and one or more AI voice providers.

Kalima asks for your consent before sending selected text, audio, or related request data to cloud AI or voice providers. Features that inherently require cloud AI or voice processing may not work without the text, audio, or metadata needed for that request.

AI outputs can be incomplete, inaccurate, offensive, unavailable, or unsuitable for your purpose. You should not rely on AI output as professional, legal, medical, financial, safety, emergency, or other expert advice.

Do not submit sensitive personal information, confidential information, regulated data, or content you do not have permission to process through AI features.

AI voice features may be subject to character limits, credit limits, fair-use limits, plan limits, rate limits, and provider availability. Credits, limits, voices, models, latency, quality, and availability may change over time.

9. Subscriptions and Purchases

Kalima may offer paid features through Kalima Pro or other subscription products. Purchases are processed through Apple's App Store in-app purchase system and managed with RevenueCat.

Before you subscribe, Kalima or Apple's purchase sheet will show the subscription title, length, price, renewal terms, and included benefits. Subscriptions may renew automatically unless canceled through Apple before the renewal deadline shown by Apple. Your Apple ID may be charged at purchase confirmation and for renewals according to Apple's App Store terms, your selected plan, and local law.

You can manage or cancel subscriptions in Apple App Store settings. Deleting the Kalima app, signing out, deleting your Kalima account, or losing access to a Kalima account does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription.

Refunds are handled by Apple unless applicable law requires otherwise. We may change prices, plans, features, limits, and entitlements, but price changes for active subscriptions will be handled according to Apple's rules and applicable law.

If a payment fails, a subscription expires, a refund is issued, or RevenueCat or Apple reports that you are not entitled to a paid feature, access to paid features may be reduced, suspended, or removed.

10. Account Deletion and Termination

You may delete your Kalima account in the app where the feature is available. Account deletion attempts to remove your Firebase Auth account, cloud documents, billing and sync documents, storage files under your user path, and local app data. Some deletion operations may take time, and some provider logs, backups, security records, legal records, or failed best-effort storage cleanup items may remain where permitted by law.

Deleting your Kalima account does not cancel your Apple App Store subscription. Manage or cancel subscriptions separately through Apple.

We may suspend or terminate access to Kalima if we believe you violated these Terms, used Kalima unlawfully, created security risk, abused services, caused harm, failed to pay for paid features, or if we must do so to comply with law or provider requirements.

11. Privacy

Kalima's handling of personal information is described in the Kalima Privacy Policy at https://kalimaapp.com/privacy. By using Kalima, you acknowledge that Kalima and its providers may process information as described there.

12. Third-Party Services

Kalima depends on third-party services, SDKs, and platforms, including Apple, Google, Firebase, RevenueCat, AI voice providers, Gutendex, Project Gutenberg, and websites or files you choose to import from.

Third-party services are governed by their own terms, policies, availability, and security practices. We are not responsible for third-party services, content, interruptions, policy changes, billing systems, AI models, catalog data, or websites.

13. Feedback

If you send ideas, suggestions, feedback, or bug reports, you grant us the right to use them without restriction or compensation. You should not send confidential information as feedback.

14. Intellectual Property

Kalima, including its app design, software, trademarks, logos, service names, and related materials, is owned by us or our licensors and is protected by intellectual-property laws.

Third-party libraries and open-source components remain subject to their own licenses. Public-domain or third-party books and metadata remain subject to their own legal status and source terms.

15. Copyright and Rights Complaints

Kalima is designed for private reading and learning. If you believe content processed through Kalima infringes your rights or that Kalima is being misused, contact [email protected] with enough information for us to review the issue.

We may remove access, disable features, delete content, or terminate accounts where required by law or where we believe use of Kalima infringes rights or violates these Terms.

16. Updates and Changes to Kalima

Kalima may update automatically or through the App Store. We may add, change, suspend, limit, or remove features, providers, plans, catalog sources, voices, AI models, sync behavior, or compatibility requirements.

Some features may depend on network access, iOS permissions, third-party services, provider quotas, subscription status, or device capability.

17. Disclaimers

Kalima is provided "as is" and "as available." To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement, availability, accuracy, and uninterrupted operation.

We do not guarantee that:

  • Kalima will be error-free, secure, uninterrupted, or always available.
  • Imports, OCR, speech recognition, AI output, translations, definitions, study scheduling, or text-to-speech will be accurate.
  • Cloud sync will preserve or restore every item.
  • Third-party catalog content will remain available or correctly licensed.
  • Paid features, voices, models, limits, or providers will remain unchanged.

Nothing in these Terms limits rights that cannot be waived under applicable consumer law.

18. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Kalima and its operators, affiliates, licensors, and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, lost content, lost subscriptions, business interruption, or service unavailability.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for claims related to Kalima will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid to Kalima for the service giving rise to the claim in the 12 months before the claim or USD $100.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of these limits may not apply to you.

19. Indemnity

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Kalima and its operators, affiliates, licensors, and service providers from claims, damages, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses arising from your use of Kalima, Your Content, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of law or third-party rights.

20. Apple App Store Terms

If you downloaded Kalima from Apple's App Store, Apple's App Store terms also apply. These Terms are between you and Kalima, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for Kalima or its content, maintenance, support, warranties, claims, or legal compliance, except as required by applicable law.

Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce these Terms against you as related to your use of Kalima.

21. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws applicable to Kalima's operator, excluding conflict-of-law rules, except where your local consumer law gives you mandatory rights. Courts or dispute-resolution bodies with lawful jurisdiction may hear disputes relating to Kalima.

Nothing in these Terms limits consumer rights you cannot waive under the laws of your place of residence.

22. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date and, where required, provide additional notice. Your continued use of Kalima after updated Terms take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
